“Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
and some lawyers have greatness thrust upon ‘em.”
– adapted from Twelfth Night
The legal event of the year, The Lawyer Show is Nightwood Theatre’s annual fundraiser. This important event raises vital funds that go towards enhancing Nightwood’s productions and training programs. Each season Nightwood auditions and casts over 30 local lawyers and legal professionals and works with them for over 2 months rehearsing lines, dissecting text, choreographing dance sequences, blocking moves – all with the goal of having fun, entertaining our audiences and raising money!
Our steampunk version of Twelfth Night is a comedy about mistaken identities, bewildering desires, practical jokes, and ribald revelry.
The main character, Viola, trades her “woman’s weeds” for the clothes of her beloved and, supposedly, dead brother, Sebastian. Now known as Cesario, she earns the love of the Countess Olivia, who believes Viola is a man. However, Viola is in love with the narcissistic Orsino, who believes he is love with Olivia. Sprinkle into this sumptuous stew the ridiculous longings of the self-righteous Malvolio and the jovial interjections of Sir Toby Belch and the fool Feste, and Twelfth Night becomes a romantic misadventure filled with many twists and turns and gender-bending surprises.
