Welcome from our new Producer Denyse Karn!

I am delighted to welcome you to our 2010-11 season and to introduce myself to you. My name is Denyse Karn and I am the new Producer/General Manager at Nightwood Theatre. I began my theatre career at Nightwood 25 years ago designing the first production of Good Night Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet by Ann-Marie MacDonald, participating in one of the first Groundswell Festivals and performing at FemCab. Since then I have been working as a producer, designer and actor across the country and am so excited to have found my way back to my roots. I am one of the women that our vision speaks of, Nightwood truly propelled me and brought me to the top of my craft in Canadian Theatre!

This season I am also designing our first production, The List by Jennifer Tremblay. With rehearsals about to start, I couldn't be more thrilled to share this remarkable work, performed by Allegra Fulton and directed by our amazing Artistic Director, KellyThornton. Please join us at the theatre!

INTRODUCING OUR NEW PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE!

Nightwood is pleased to welcome Yael Farber as our Canada Council playwright-in-residence. She will be working throughout the year on a new work titled NAMUS: Honor Killings at Aulis. This radical adaption of Euripides Iphigenia at Aulis is a potent exploration of the chilling phenomenon of honour killings.

“Using the ancient story of Iphigenia's death at the hands of her father Agamemnon, to view the widely practiced and tacitly condoned act of "honor killings" may bring to greater light the extraordinary silence of our world in the face of the on-going violence against the Body Feminine - as well as how this practice manifests in subtler forms in societies that believe themselves to be above such conduct".
