Enormity, Girl, and the earthquake in her lungs

Written by Chelsea Woolley
Directed by Andrea Donaldson

September 16 – October 05, 2025
Nancy & Ed Jackman Performance Centre – Performance Hall
(877 Yonge St.)

Time stands still as Vic crash-lands in a women’s shelter. The more she tries to listen to her inner voice, the more the fractured perspectives of her personified mind clamour to be heard. Enormity offers a highly physical, fresh, and unexpectedly comedic take on a woman in her 20s seeking refuge.

Enormity, Girl, and the Earthquake in Her Lungs was developed in Nightwood Theatre’s esteemed Write from the Hip program, marking a 10-year collaboration for celebrated artists Chelsea Woolley (playwright) and Andrea Donaldson (director).

September 24 – Infusing Care Into the Work

What is our responsibility of care when we stage difficult themes? Join key members of the Enormity team, playwright Chelsea Woolley, Intimacy & Fight Director Christina Fox, and Nightwood Managing Director Naz Afsahi, for a vital conversation on how compassion and safety are woven into every step of the creative process. This panel will explore the duty of care, from the first word on the page to the final curtain call.

September 28 – Exploring the Mind in Parts

The explosive ensemble of Enormity brings to life a mind divided by trauma. Where does this artistic exploration meet real-world experience? Join us to discuss how inner personas can serve as coping mechanisms with our panellists: Judy Rebick, who has bravely shared her journey of navigating eleven distinct personalities developed in response to traumatic events, and a clinical expert in Internal Family Systems (IFS), a branch of psychotherapy that views the mind as being made up of different sub-personalities or “parts.”

September 30 – Through the Shelter Process

Hear from local experts who are on the front lines of Toronto’s shelter system. We’re pleased to welcome Harmony Adzido (YWCA) and Deepa Mattoo (Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic) to discuss the urgent challenges facing Toronto. They will provide critical insights into the current climate and future direction of shelters, legal clinics, and domestic violence health care, exploring how systemic barriers intersect to impact survivors.

Dates TBD – Cast Talkbacks

Have a chat with the cast of Enormity! Join members of this dynamic ensemble to unpack their experience working on this piece.

We want to make sure that Enormity, Girl, and the Earthquake in Her Lungs can be enjoyed by as many patrons as possible. Between the intensity of any play and the heavier themes referenced in this piece, we are putting in place the following initiatives to proactively tend to our audiences’ needs.

Relaxed Environment: We want everyone to feel comfortable responding how they need to during the play. We will have relaxed entrances and exits, ushers to guide the way, and a quiet zone equipped with water, fidget toys, and comfy chairs for every show.

Mask-Mandatory Show: We will require all patrons and staff to wear masks throughout the duration of our September 28 performances.

Venue Guide: Our great friends at the Disability Collective have crafted a wonderful Venue Guide for the Nancy & Ed Jackman Performance Centre. Here you can find details about how to find us and what to expect once you’re in the space. Check out the guide here.

Access Guide: We have an incoming Access Guide from the Disability Collective as well! There, you will be able to learn about what to expect from the show and specific policies we’ll have in place around the performance. Once rehearsal are done and we have a clearer idea of the show, we’ll update our website with this guide and send it to patrons on the day of their visit.
